Standards of Student Uniform

RNW —

Uniform is an important part in establishing a strong culture at Shirley Boys’ High School. It contributes to developing student ownership and pride in their school as well as maintaining an identity in the community. All students are required to wear the correct uniform both to and from school, on all school visits (where appropriate), and throughout the school day. PE gear is not to be worn to or from school. The correct sports and physical education uniforms must only be worn during these classes. Hair must be neatly presented. 

Hair

Hair must be kept off the face and shoulders at all times, through cut or pulled back off the face using a single plain hair tie. Health and Safety requirements take precedence at all times in specific subject areas. One natural hair colour is permitted. No extremes of fashion are permitted. Students whose hair style is deemed by staff, not to meet the requirements outlined are to be sent immediately to the Dean's Office for final consideration and/or correction. Exemptions on religious and cultural grounds can be made through the Dean's Office and will require a meeting with family or community leader. 

Facial Hair 

All Students must be clean shaven at all times. Exemptions on religious and cultural grounds can be made through the Dean's Office and will require a meeting with family and/or community leader. Any student with facial hair is to be sent immediately to the Dean's Office for it to be corrected. 

Jewellery 

A single plain metallic stud is permitted in each ear. No other jewellery is permitted. This includes neck chains, bracelets, rings and eye, tongue or nose studs. Taonga, such as pounamu, may be worn if it is culturally significant to the student and his whanau. Belts worn must be plain blue or black with non-descript, standard buckles. They are to be of suitable length, tucked in at the trouser strap. 

Shoes

All students are required to wear black leather dress shoes. Dress shoes are determined as having a heel. Shoes are required to be nuggeted. Black skateboard shoes and running shoes are not permitted. Dress shoes in need of repair are also not permitted. The school operates a ‘Shoe Bank’ where students with incorrect shoes report to the Dean's Office before the start of the first class. They are issued correct footwear for the day. If a student is wearing incorrect footwear at any point during the day he should be immediately sent to the Dean's Office. Sandals Black leather roman sandals, with an ankle strap, are permitted to be worn with ie faitaga or school shorts.
