Eco Action Club

Eco Action Club Inauguration 2017

Teacher in Charge: Mr Newton (DJN)

Aim: Become involved in projects for the benefit of the Community and Environment.

Numbers: Limited initially to 10 keen students.

Student Time Requirement

An hour and a half a week on Wednesday afternoons in Term 1 and 4 and maybe slightly less in Terms 2 and 3. Students can spend more than this if they want to increase their involvement with the gardens or other projects.

Students will learn about plants – how to grow them, what they are used for, who needs them (people, bees, butterflies) and the process of sustainable use of the gardening facilities we have in the school. They will be able to take this learning back into the community to help their families grow food.

Vegetable gardening – planning, planting, growing and harvesting for year round food. (Currently food grown in the garden is donated to needy families of the school community.)

Nursery – Producing ECO sourced trees and shrubs that produce food for native birds and help to re-vegetate our new School site and the Red Zone surrounds.

Beekeeping – learning about beekeeping and helping with maintenance of the hive. Bees are needed for pollinating our crops and producing honey.

Economics – Planning how to generate enough income from the gardens and hive to fund our own gardens, and also to donate plants to the Community. How many do we need to sell and at what cost?

Power Saving – Eco Action have put up notices next to light switches in the school asking that they be turned off when not being used. This could save considerably on our use of electricity.

Other projects that may be included depending on Students interests:

Butterfly garden, bird counts, involvement with river cleanup, recycling, weather recording and any other suggestions that members are enthusiastic about.
