Hockey 4XI, Badminton, Table Tennis and Futsal Whites

Hockey 4XI

The team has just finished their season many of them playing hockey for the first time. The team started with mainly Year 9 students then Mr Jackman conned some of his Year 11 Accounting students into playing Friday night sport. This added some bulk to the team.    Ably coached by Kevin Jonker along with Mr Jackman and Mr Richards, the team progressed so well through the season that in the second half of the competition they finished on equal points at the top of the table. They lost the overall top position by goal difference. By the end of the season, players were using the width of the field and defending their goal well.  Chevy Hira ably filled in the last couple of games as goalie when Greg Galovale was unable to play.  The games were refereed by Jonty Teague who took over from a much relieved Miss Nesbit.

Badminton

With a growing interest in playing badminton this year, we decided to put four teams in the Wednesday competition.

So three senior teams and one junior team which consisted of three Year 9 and one Year 10 were entered.

We played most of our games here at school, which was a great help as we didn’t have to worry about transport to other venues too often.

Three of the teams were in the same grade in Division 2 in the B grade which proved to be a very competitive division with some very good teams from Burnside, Cathedral College and Hornby.

Our junior team took the title defeating Hornby in a very close and exciting encounter. This team is shaping up to be a very talented and bodes well for our badminton future at school.

This is our third consecutive year of winning that division.

The senior A team took the Division 1 in the B grade title again in close and hard fought games against Linwood.

Both our Shirley teams played well throughout and had most points from the weekly competition prior to the finals so deserved the wins.

The other two teams also deserved their placings in the division two competition and finished 5th and 6th.

A big thank you to Ms Jennings and Mrs Casey who helped Ms McMillan with the Wednesday competition which the students really appreciated.

Table Tennis

Table Tennis is becoming a very popular sport at school due to superior equipment and a very good coach.

This year we entered two teams in the Wednesday inter school competition with our top four players entered in the A Grade Division 1 and the other team entered in the B Grade Division 1. Both teams playing in a Division 1 grade and being highly ranked amongst the 38 other teams across all grades.

Both teams consisted of young students which bodes well for the next few years for Shirley Boys' High.  We just missed out on the top placing in Canterbury and so therefore took the second placing, while the second team came third in their grade.

The teams consisted of

Shirley Gold playing in the A grade.

Joseph Farrell (Year 11)

Jed Beligon (Year 11)

Ben Skeats (Year 12)

Futsal Whites

On Wednesday 26th August we were fortunate to have Scott Gilligan, Futsal Whites Coach, and Sam Lapslie, Futsal White and Mainland Schools Development Officer come to Shirley to coach and train our Futsal players. We worked on skills and drills and were privileged to have such an opportunity. Scott said he immediately saw many talented young men looking for places in our Junior and Senior teams. Trials start in the Week beginning 7th September for Wednesday and Sunday Competitions.
