Ti Kōuka 1

Shirley Primary School —

In Ti Kōuka this year we have a new teacher called Miss Matai who is the teacher of T1. As she is a new teacher we decided to learn more about her by interviewing her.

Here are some submissions from some T1 students:

Jacob - From 1-10 what would you rate this school?

Miss Matai - 20 because the staff and tamariki are amazing and I love waking up everyday to come to school.

Nevaeh - Have you ever baby sat someone?

Miss Matai - Yes I have when I was younger I did for a few families.

Betty - How did you become a teacher?

Miss Matai - I went to the University of Canterbury and did three years worth of study and got a bachelor's degree.

Jacob - How funny are the jokes that the other teachers tell?

Miss Matai - Well I would say they are a 7/10 because they are funny but I am a 8 or 9 out of 10 because I am the funniest.

Shaydyn - Where are you from?

Miss Matai - I was born in Christchurch but I am also Samoan and Swiss.

Kate - What is the scariest thing you’ve ever done?

Miss Matai - In high school I went cliff jumping and that was pretty scary.

Nivek - How old are you?

Miss Matai - 21

Asmaa - If you weren’t a teacher what job would you want to have?

Miss Matai - I would love to do something creative like interior or graphic design or event planning.

Miriama - What made you become a teacher?

Miss Matai - I wanted to be a teacher because I love helping ākonga (students) and I love learning.

Asees - What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever done?

Miss Matai - In my last year of study, I went on a 10 day holiday to Rarotonga with my university friends and we did fun things like drive buggies, snorkel and eat Rarotongan food.

Srishti - Do you like being a teacher?

Miss Matai - DEFINITELY! It’s the best job I’ve ever had.

Isabelle - What is your favourite sport?

Miss Matai - I’ve played lots of different sports but my absolute favourite would have to be dragon boating which I did in high school where you paddle in a boat with 22 other people.
