Healthy Active Learning Survey

Shirley Primary School —

Last year whānau and tamariki were surveyed to find out how we can improve Pe and Health in our kura.

At Shirley we participate in the Healthy Active Learning (HAL) program which strives to improve wellbeing of rangatahi through health and quality physical activity.

Some data that was collected from our tamariki was that the majority of our students love pe. These were the reasons they enjoy it

  • Good way to make friends

  • Makes them feel good

  • Like learning new skills.

Some reasons why physical activity was not liked was due to the choices students were making during the games resulting in cheating.

The data which came from the parent survey was that they value sportsmanship, confidence and resilience in physical education. In health, parents cared the most about students learning how to look after themselves.

This data was very useful and has helped kaiako teaching HPE this year. We have focused on discussing values when playing different games to make it the best environment for all. We have also focused on resilience in the classroom through Kiwican and Keeping Ourselves Safe program.

Some information that came through from students saying that they would like to play more games from their culture at school. As a school we strive to be as inclusive of all cultures in our classes. Teachers would also like to facilitate this too so if you know a cultural game please reach out to your classroom teacher. This could be a card/ board game or a team sport game.
