Alistair Sim —

Update from Mr Sim

Kia ora koutou,

On Monday afternoon Shelley and I were able to attend the official opening of the Nourish Oraka business which has been supplying our school lunches. While the business has been operating since the start of this term they have only just managed to find the time to celebrate their opening and at the same time celebrate delivering their 10,000th lunch. It was wonderful to be able to celebrate this with Bec, Phillipa and their team (a number of whom are also parents from our school) and also the wider community. One of our house leaders Alyiah was asked to cut the ribbon to officially open the premises.

Hopefully everyone made it through the heavy rain we had two weeks ago. There were a number of schools who needed to close due to building leaks or surface water issues. Thankfully we had no issues in terms of weather tightness and with our new drainage which was recently installed in front of the Akeake block there was very little surface water which was a major difference to what we had experienced previously.

From our recently completed health consultation one of the areas some parents identified as an opportunity for our children was to learn first aid. Over the last few weeks our classes have been having sessions through the St Johns in Schools programme. The children have been learning a range of skills including understanding the role of the emergency services, identifying and managing common hazards and how to respond in an emergency.

Unfortunately our social worker Lyndon Summerlee has resigned from STAND and as such the Social Worker in Schools Programme. I have been assisting STAND with their interviews and hopefully we will be able to announce a replacement shortly.

On Wednesday June 23rd our teaching staff will be attending a paid union meeting from 1:30pm. While school is not officially closed on this day, to enable staff to attend this meeting we do request parents help us by making arrangements to collect their children at 1.30pm. At this stage only non-union members will be left at school. Any children already enrolled to attend the After School Care Programme will be able to remain at school supervised before heading to the programme at 3pm. If your child walks home and you would like them to walk home on this day at 1:30pm please make sure that you have made contact with your child’s classroom teacher so they are aware of this.

This Friday we will be having a learning assembly being run by M3 and M4. The assembly starts at 9:10am and everyone is welcome.

Ngā mihi nui Alistair Sim (Principal / Tumuaki)
