Battle of the Basin - 2018

Anna Browne —

Yesterday, Tuesday 31st July we fielded teams in hockey, football, netball and basketball for the annual Battle of the Basin Tournament against the other local primary schools; Remarkables, QPS, St Joseph’s and Arrowtown. Each year Shotover is getting stronger with greater representation in all sports.

A number of the players were put into teams where they hadn’t played that sport competitively before. We also had a number of of Year 5 & 6 students who were recruited to ensure we had full teams. A great example of children demonstrating their growth mindset!

Well done to all the teams who competed strongly, they should be really proud of their skills, determination and sportsmanship. Each game the players improved, working together as a team and showing some great skills.

Special thanks to the Mentors for sorting teams and coaching - Mr Brown, Miss SJ, Mrs Clark and Mrs Wallis. We also had parent coaches who we couldn’t have done without - Thank you Paul Hibbett & Hamish Anderson, Gayle Thornton & Tina Ratcliff, Tanya Moffat & Olivia Read. Jackie Rule was in charge of the numbers, managing the scoring table and tracking results, while Mr White did his magic with logistics and set up.  Lastly to Tomas Colby who was our logistical support for the day.

Thank you to the family and friends that braved the persistent rain and came out to support. We all got a bit wet, but dried out in the end!

Congratulations to the Shotover Basketball team for taking taking out first place and adding a trophy to the Shotover trophy cabinet!

Congratulations also to our boys hockey team who came runner up in their competition after a few very tough games.

Overall Remarkables Primary School were awarded first place winning the Battle of the Basin Shield with Arrowtown Primary School Runner up. Shotover Primary came 4th overall out of the 5 primary schools which is a really impressive result. In time, as Shotover grows we’ll be able to field teams in all categories and we’ll be real contenders for the Battle of the Basin Shield - Watch this space!
