Sports round-up - Term 2
Once again a busy term on the sporting front. Weather was our biggest challenge but we finished the term on a high last week with perfect conditions to run both the junior and senior Shotover cross country events.
Orienteering
Orienteering took a back seat after snow, ice and sub zero temperatures cancelled both the Wakatipu and the Central Otago orienteering events. Thanks to Emily Forne for running trials and training for students who were keen to participate. A Year 5-8 Shotover team of 24 students were selected and ready to compete. We are now looking to reschedule the Central Otago Orienteering Championship for Term 4 when the warmth of the sun returns.
Rippa Rugby
With the initial postponement of the Wakatipu Rippa Tournament due to snow we got underway in frosty conditions on Friday the 8th June. We now have 2 teams going through to the Dunedin Rippa Tournament on the 7th August at Forsyth barr Stadium. GOOD LUCK to both teams!

Cross Country
The Shotover Primary junior (Year 1-3) and senior (Year 4-8) cross country were held last week on Thursday 28th June. Everyone from Year 1- Year 8 had the opportunity to participate and show their speed, strength and determination. There was lots of puffing and lots of smiles. It was a great to see the perseverance and positive attitudes of all the children. Congratulations to all Shotover students!
The junior cross country was held within the school grounds with the added obstacles of hay bales, horse jumps and a ninja scramble. A big thanks to the Smith family for your endless support in this event. A special thanks also to the Shotover PALs (Physical Activity Leaders) for supporting the junior runners and enabling parents to watch and cheer on their children. Please follow this link for the junior cross country top 3 placings.
The senior cross country was held out of the school grounds this year. With the Year 4-8 students assembling at the start/finish line set up at the corner of Tonis Terrace and Oxfordshire Avenue. The run took the all students down on to the Queenstown trail near the Shotover River. The Year 7&8 children went further afield over the fence and along the Shotover River with the guidance of marshals dotted along the track. General consensus was that the favourite part was last grassy hill, just prior to the finish line - true Cross Country style! Some real character shone through - Well done! Please follow this link for the senior cross country top placings.
The top placings (numbers to be confirmed) for Year 5-8 will progress to the Wakatipu Zone Cross Country to be held in Arrowtown on the 17th August (Term 3).
It was a highly successful day out and took the help and assistance of many people to make it run smoothly. A big thanks to parents who came out to marshal, set up and and pack up. Thank you also to everyone else who helped in any capacity, your support is greatly appreciated.
Coming up in Term 3
First up next term is the annual Year 7&8 Battle of the Basin (31st July) where all the local primary schools compete against each other in hockey, rugby, netball, football and basketball. The Otago Rippa Rugby tournament is next on the cards followed by Wakatipu Zone Cross country and then Central Otago Cross Country. Enjoy your holidays!
