Shotover Primary School

Newsletter - 11 September 2019

Kia Ora

As I write, we are well into September and heading towards the term break at pace. For those of you planning, this means the last day of term will be Friday 27th September, which is less than 3 weeks away. While we are talking dates, please also note that we will be having a staff only day on Friday 18th October - this means that we are closed for the day.

Last week had a big finish to it. On Friday, we hosted eleven principals from around the country. Many of this group I have known for awhile and greatly admire the work happening in their respective schools, so I was interested and somewhat nervous to have them visit. I was keen to hear their thoughts on Shotover Primary School and, in particular, their perception of how our vision and principles connected to what is happening on the ground for teachers and kids. Their feedback was thoughtful and helpful - they spoke about the high level of coherence between what is espoused at a vision and values level to what is happening on the ground. They also noted the clear decisions that have been made by staff to engage learning and set up the spaces in such a way that leads to deeper learning.

Immediately following the principals' visit, we hosted the Minister of Education for an hour. He toured the school for the first 40 minutes, with some of our ambassadors showing him through the habitats and articulating the learning taking place in the various spaces. They finished up in Rees where the Minister was peppered with, quite frankly, some outstanding questions from our year 7 & 8’s. You can read them here (he didn’t have time to get through them all). You should be very proud of our children and, in particular, our ambassadors. Our children were confident and curious and our ambassadors were just that: representatives for our organisation, speaking incredibly well on our behalf and not at all deterred by the fact that their audience was a senior government minister.

Only 10 days until the All Blacks kick off their campaign for a third consecutive world cup.
