Grandparents Day (Special Persons' Day)

Priscilla Thatcher —

We were very happy when Tuesday the 4th of June dawned with a clear sky so we could go ahead with our showcase under the canopy for our Grandparents (or special people). Although we arranged for almost every chair in the school to be set out, our audience still filled them and spilled over to standing - again!

The entire school was so excited to welcome our special guests and share our beautiful singing, dancing and special memories of time we had spent with them. Before long, it was time to invite them to join their mokopuna in the classroom and have some precious one-on-one time.

Classes had prepared a variety of experiences that children could do with their Grandparent including snuggling up to read a book together, interviewing them to discover new information or perspectives, playing games together and sharing learning the children were proud of or excited about.
The time went very quickly and before long the children had to say a reluctant goodbye. At the school gate, Grandparents were heard promising to be back next year and, to be honest, we cannot wait!
