Celebrating our Cultures Week

Priscilla Thatcher —

In week 3 of this term we held our 'Celebrating Our Cultures' week. We are so privileged to have so many different cultures within our school community and this is a special time when we celebrate this.

During the week we were treated to some caregivers coming into classrooms and sharing aspects of their culture with us. This included reading traditional stories and sharing special foods. The learners also created some art compositions based on art styles from a range of countries and took part in a Scavenger Hunt around the school where the children had to find and identify greetings in numerous different languages.

The week also included a Soccer World Cup tournament held over several lunch hours where the learners had to choose a country to compete for, dress in the appropriatecolours and take part in the tournament. This was greatly enjoyed by both players and spectators.

The culmination of the week was a special assembly held on the Friday morning.  Learners and staff carried flags, and dressed in clothing that represented their country of birth. We were treated to an amazing array of different dances, representing many different cultures, performed by groups of students, staff members and parents. We also had some senior students who presented very interesting talks about their country of birth.

It was a great week, enjoyed by all.
