Pōwhiri

Priscilla Thatcher - May 10, 2023

On Tuesday, 10th May all of our school community had the incredible opportunity to be a part of a pōwhiri (a formal welcoming ceremony). The purpose of the pōwhiri was to officially welcome and honour new relationships that our school is forming with people from a local marae.

The marae is Rukumoana and the hapū is Ngāti Hauā. A kaumātua (respected leader) from Ngāti Wairere was also present, as a way of showing their support of this new relationship. All tāmariki and kaiako had the privilege of not only watching this pōwhiri, but also took a really important role in performing their waiata and haka. This is done as a way of supporting the speeches that were shared. Our tāmariki can be so proud of themselves - they did a fantastic job!We now have a new relationship and are looking forward to the connections and learning with Ngāti Hauā!
