ANZAC Day Remembrance Assembly

Alana Curry —

Following a week of learning about what ANZAC day represents, the school had a Remembrance Assembly on Friday of Week 1.

Throughout the week, our tamariki developed their knowledge and understanding of ANZAC day and what it represents. At the assembly some classes shared snapshots of what they had learned.

While we included some of the traditional elements that an ANZAC day commemoration would have, we also shared some of what we had learned. We heard about what the letters for ANZAC stand for, some stories and letters written by learners using the perspective of a soldier, and saw how students overcame some challenges, such as creating and carrying a student on a stretcher.

This was also a chance to connect to our refreshed Social Sciences and History curriculum as we explored the "stories woven into people’s collective and diverse identities."  Recognising "the social and cultural importance of community practices, heritage, traditions, knowledge, and values" as we learned about this significant day in Aotearoa's heritage, and the traditions and stories that are woven into our country's identity when we commemorate the ANZAC's and the experiences they and their families went through.
