Fidgeting - can help us focus!

Michael Harrop —

We have been learning that if we are feeling in the Yellow or Blue zones... sometime fidgeting can help us get back into the Green.

Fidget toys are becoming incredibly available in toy shops these days - but did you know they are more than just the latest fad that your kids are bugging you for??

There are times that having a fidget toy such as a small ball, fidget popper or other device can help provide a small physical break for the body and allow the mind to focus and be ready for learning - back in the Green Zone.

A few simple rules to make sure they do the job they are meant for:

1. Fidget toys should not be played with

2. Your eyes must always be on the person speaking (teacher / parent) or the work you are doing - not the fidget toy

3. The fidget toy should not leave your hand

4. Textured fidgets (bumps etc) are good it you are feeling slow and tired (Blue Zone). Firm fidgets (Poppers, items filled with sand / flour etc) are good if you are feeling fast, emotional or wiggly (Yellow Zone).

You don't need to go out and purchase anything flash to be a fidget toy either! A piece of velcro on a jacket, old bubble wrap, a small plastic toy with bumps and ridges - all can be held in the hand and provide the physical stimulus to help us move back into the Green.

If you do happen to send your child to school with a most costly solution (popper toys etc), please can you ensure these are clearly named. At times these can go missing and one popper can look very much like another.
