Michael Harrop —

Rach has been on the Silverdale Board of Trustees for 8 years - what a contribution to our school! We asked her if she wouldn't mind writing a bit about her experience. Check out her video below.

Kia ora Silverdale community.

My name is Rach Dixon. I have been privileged to be on the Board of Trustees here at Silverdale Normal School for the last eight years. I will be finishing up later this year as our youngest is nearly finished Year 6 and I think it’s time to let someone else have a turn!

Joining the board is a great way to get involved in your child’s education from a different perspective. As parents, we all want the very best for our kids. We want them to succeed in life and to grow up to be responsible, contributing members of society. As a parent representative on the board, I have had the opportunity to be part of decision making that helps my kids and yours to have a great experience at primary school as well as setting them up for future achievement.

Being on the board has given me insight into how schools operate; a greater appreciation for the amazing staff we have here at Silverdale; a view of the bigger picture from classrooms to policy and the chance to make a positive difference in terms of governance. Getting involved in our kids’ education at this level is really important. It’s not a scary thing to do, there is lots of support and training available to board members. We meet twice a term which is very manageable.

If you’ve ever thought about standing for the Board of Trustees, may I encourage you - do it! Come along to one of our meetings to see what’s involved and get a feel for how they run. We need people who are invested in our school and community to help lead our school forward.

We need people to represent our diverse community. We need people with a range of different skills and strengths to provide balance.

I’m happy to chat further with anyone who’d like to find out more. My email is rach@ardentbd.co.nz Thanks
