Assalaamu-alaikum

(Peace be upon you)

Tena koutou

My name is Sumaiya Khan. We immigrated to New Zealand from India about 14 years ago. We started our lives in Rotorua (my ‘hometown’) before moving to Hamilton to be closer to our family and friends. I am married to Samrud who is a Clinical Coding Auditor at the Hospital. We have three lovely and affectionate kids - Alesha and Aizzah who study at Silverdale Normal and Abdiel who is at Berkley Normal Middle School.

I have a Bachelor degree in Respiratory Care. Since moving to Hamilton I pursued a career in administration, was a team leader and recently become the manager for the Child Development Centre, Te Whatu Ora Health NZ (previously Waikato DHB).

I am very passionate about supporting children today for a better tomorrow. I have been a Trustee on the Silverdale School Board for the last three years. As a Board we provide an oversight, plan, and support the direction the school takes. Our school community has navigated the many challenges over the last two years with COVID through Kotahitanga – being stronger together!

We also have something very special here at Silverdale Normal, we have exceptional teachers and principals who are truly invested in helping our children identify their individual strengths and weaknesses, build a strong sense of culture and identity and steer them towards overall growth and success.

I  appreciate the opportunity to continue as a board member, working harder in the best interest of our children and teachers while also being an effective representative of our fabulous and diverse community!
