Kiss & Drop

Ben Gorman —

In light of the physical distancing and contact tracing requirements, we asked parents to stay offsite. This has resulted in unexpected consequences.

We were very conscious that students are often anxious at the beginning of the day. Mum, Dad and home provide a wonderful security blanket that calms and reassures our young people. We recognise that, for some, school can be daunting and scary.

With the uncertainty around returning from lockdown - coupled with parents being asked to say goodbye at the gate, we were prepared for some fragile and upset students over the last two weeks. We had extra teachers and teacher aides on hand to help settle any upset students. However, their services have been found redundant.

The routine of mum or dad coming to the classroom and "hanging around for a while" has been the norm for many years. Logically, the parents of more anxious children often "hung around" even longer. However, over the last two weeks, this hasn't been possible. But rather than suffer, the children have flourished.

We look forward to being able to welcome parents back into the school grounds... but do want to ask you to consider: "Do I need to come in every day?"

If we want your children to develop their ability to manage self, if we want them to grow in independence and resilience... we need to give them more opportunities to manage themselves, show independence and resilience. Our experience over the last two weeks tells us that parents need to be encouraged to regularly "Kiss and Drop". Not all the time... we would miss the informal communication and community offered by you popping in. But we strongly encourage EVERY FAMILY to consider employing the "Kiss and Drop" system a few days a week!

Pickup & Dropoff Ben Gorman

Logistics for Pickup and Dropoff from next week:

  • The school bell for the end of the day will return to 3pm
  • Parents are permitted onsite 8.30 - 8.50 and 2.55 - 3.05. However, they must see the duty teacher to be recorded on the contact tracing register.
  • Many of the senior students have been walking and meeting parents a block away. This has eased a lot of congestion at pickup time. If this has worked for you, consider persisting with this practice.
  • Before school you can "kiss and drop" at either gate.
  • After school, those using the Chervier Carpark are expected to park and come to the gate. (i.e. no stopping in the middle of the carpark to upload your child)
  • The parks along the top end of George St have a time limit. We encourage this space for quick pickup after school. If you wish to stay in your car - let your child know to meet you on the George St side. They will be supervised during the pickup time (behind the fence out the back of Piwakawaka and Ruru)

If you have any questions - please let me know.
