The bike track is fully in use and our tamariki getting a lot of exercise

Here is some important information

The track has been rostered to allow classes to have access on a certain day. Teachers will use the track as part of their fitness on the designated day and when not in use by others.

Tamariki must have a helmet as per our school policy. This includes in and out of school hours.

Tamariki staying after school must go home at 3:10pm ( as usual) unless with a parent.

Parents are responsible for children after school on the bike track.

Intermediate and other children are not allowed on the track until after 3:30pm. I have spoken to groups but have also contacted the intermediate and reminded them about helmets.

The school is NOT a public place and you are well within your rights to deal with inappropriate behaviour.( This includes reminding them about helmets)

Out of school hours you are responsible for your own children.

Bikes, Scooters and Other “Wheelies” on School Grounds- Policy

Bikes, scooters, and other "wheelies" are an important, sustainable, and healthy means of transport and part of life for many Somerfield Te Kura Wairepo families. Reasonable precautions are needed to ensure students feel and are kept safe.

This policy applies to bikes, scooters, and other "wheelies", whether or not powered or motorised.

• Only students in years 5 and 6 are allowed to travel independently to school. For younger year levels we recommend that parents accompany their children to school.
• Parents and guardians are responsible for students’ safety while travelling to and from school. The school is responsible for students only once they have entered the school grounds and during school hours.
• Students are to ride bikes, scooters, and other "wheelies" sensibly and safely, with consideration for others, and while adhering to all road rules, and requirements of transport providers (e.g. Lime).
• Closed shoes and standards safety approved bike helmets must be worn, and wheelies must be roadworthy and regularly maintained. Students may not "double" other students.
• Wheelies must be walked across roads and crossings, when entering the school grounds, and while in the school grounds.
• Wheelies must be parked and locked in the bike/scooter racks in the secured area. Wheelies and helmets brought to school are stored at the owner’s risk and students should bring their own lock. Students should only enter the rack area to park or remove their own bike/scooter.
• Wheelies are not allowed to be ridden on the school grounds after 8.30 am and before 3.30 pm on school days. Riding is only permitted on the school grounds during these times when permitted by the principal, for example:
  • "Wheelie Wednesdays" – encouraging the use of non-powered/non-motorised bikes and scooters as a positive and healthy habit for students
  • Christchurch City Council’s Cycle Safe programme
  • using the bike track.
