Message from the Tumuaki

Denise Torrey —

He mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa - Warm greetings to all.

Another couple of busy weeks at Somerfield with class trips to the Museum and Art Gallery for some and the various events our tamariki are competing in this week and next. Included in these is the Year 6 trip to South to see their production. We  love supporting this event and spotting the ex Somerfield tamariki performing!

Literacy Quiz team

Best wishes to our literacy quiz team who compete here tonight. I know this group has been working hard with Mrs Welbeloved , Miss McKinney and their whānau to prepare for this event. Thank you to these folk for their support of our tamariki.

Maths Professional Development

Today we are hosting 33 teachers and principals from across Kahukura and Otautahi schools who are participating in maths professional development.

Poutama Reo Trial

Over the last few months Somerfield Te Kura Wairepo has been working with the Education Review Office to trail a tool called Poutama Reo. We are one of the small number of schools across the motu to be asked to do this work.

This tool has been designed as a self review tool so schools can independently use to determine where they are at and explore next steps to transform policies and practices in relation to Māori language across the school. Somerfield was an obvious choice of school  to help with the tools as we have had all tamariki learn te reo for nearly 10 years. We have used the tools with teachers, children and a group of whanau and the feedback about the tool was sent to the ERO team who are working on this.

This tool will be launched nationally on 21 September by Ministers Davis and Tinetti in Wellington. Daniel Caigou and Kellie Englefield will represent our kura at the launch.

Relationships and Sexuality Education

Below is some more information for whānau. The majority of this unit is about relationships and is threaded through many other units throughout the year.  There are only two 45 minutes lessons at each level covering gender roles and body parts, care and function. These lessons depend on the age of the tamariki. If you have any questions about what will be taught please see your child's teacher.
