Message from the Tumuaki

Denise Torrey - March 29, 2022

Sadly, today we are carrying out an investigation into an abusive email sent from a student's account in the early hours of the morning. Just after midnight in fact!

The nature of the email is such that it is a matter for Netsafe who are able to use further investigative powers that the school does not have as it happened from a home ip address. This is a serious matter for a number of reasons- the email was sent from a home IP address which means someone was accessing technology at 12:30am in the morning and secondly, its abusive nature. We have been aware in the past that some children are accessing devices at night. If you have concerns about your child's technology use, there is some excellent information available to help you on the Netsafe site.

Please have a conversation with your child about - not sharing passwords, closing down accounts when they have finished using them and the responsible use of technology.

We are in an interesting phase in our COVID journey this week. After active cases in the fifties at the beginning of the last week, this week we have seen a drop and plateauing of numbers. Check out the case numbers in the COVID update. Unfortunately we have a lot of staff isolating as they are either positive or household contacts and classes affected have been notified. Like our tamariki we also have a number of staff who are away due having symptoms. We have been fortunate enough to cover with relievers in most cases so we maintain our class bubbles.

It will be interesting to see what next week's numbers are like across Canterbury schools, but anecdotally we seem to have lower numbers so THANK YOU whānau for you help!

If you are parking and waiting for your tamariki on the road around the school while waiting to pick them up please take care of our cyclists. Please check the rear vision and side mirrors first before leaving your car. Our tamariki are vulnerable on their bikes so please take the utmost care when driving and leaving vehicles. We have had a child knocked off their bike recently.

Please have a conversation with your children about their lunches. We have noticed that more children are saying they need more food. Our tamariki are very busy at school and along with the cooler weather and growth spurts, some are hungrier!!

A reminder that Teachers Only Day is on Thursday 14 April (the day before the Easter break) and SCHOOL  IS CLOSED.

Planning is underway for our Cross Country next Friday, 8 April - 11am. The children have been training and we are looking forward to seeing you on site. Please do not go to the classrooms but remain on the field and spread out around the track. The Cross Country is classed as an event but under the Red setting there are only essential visitors. Visiting classroom is not essential.
