Mid Term Report

Julie Bassett —

It has come to that time of year when we send home our mid-year report. These will be sent out on the last day of the term.

We measure progress against the NZ Curriculum in all areas through Spotlight, but highlight the three core areas of Reading, Writing and Maths in the mid term report.

We use Curriculum levels 1-5, with each divided into three parts to show progress: B - beginning, M - middle, E - end.

Year 1 and 2- Level 1

Year 3 and 4- Level 2

Year 5 and 6- Level 3

Year 7 and 8- Level 4

While we carry out some assessments, the main ways we find what levels children work at are through observation, working with them daily and having regular learning conversations with them. We combine evidence to place children within a level that best suits where their learning is currently. The diagram shows how curriculum levels typically relate to years at school. Many students do not, however, fit this pattern. They include those with special learning needs, those who are gifted, and those who come from non-English-speaking backgrounds. Students learning an additional language are also unlikely to follow the suggested progression.

At Somerfield Te Kura Wairepo we set curriculum level expectations for each year level so we can monitor student progress over time. The diagram below shows these expected curriculum levels at the middle and the end of the year.

The report this year can be viewed on the school app and will be emailed to caregivers on the last day of the term as PDF. If you are not receiving emails from the school, please check with the office that we have your correct email. We will not be printing reports unless you have no access to a device or internet connection. We are currently aware of the families who are in this situation.
