I have had the great pleasure of coaching what we have named ‘The Best Hockey Team Ever’. These 4 girls and boys from year 5 & 6 have made me incredibly proud to be involved with sport at Somerfield School. Since qualifying for the Canterbury Championships these kids have got up early and trained at the Sydenham Park hockey turf every Friday morning for 5 weeks. On tournament day, the team played amazingly winning 2 games, drawing 2 and losing one. Which meant they came 5th overall out of 14 teams. That means 5th in Canterbury!!! An incredible achievement. Four of these children have only played a small amount of hockey, hopefully their success will inspire more kids to give a new sport a try.

Their dedication to practice, their enthusiasm, their team spirit and their sportsmanship – modest winners and graceful losers has utterly earnt them the title “The Best Hockey Team ever”, thanks to all of you for making it such fun.

A huge thank you also to Jo Mcharg for her help ferrying children to and fro and running the subs on the day, and to the other parents who have helped and supported the team. - By Gillie Watson (Hockey Coach)
