On the 20th and 21st of March the Year 6 children went to the Christchurch City Council building to learn about being in a council and what it means to be a leader. We learnt about the different departments in the Christchurch City Council and what the people in these departments do.

For part of the session we got to go to the Council Chambers. When we were there we all got roles in a meeting. For example Max was the mayor and Zac was one of the general managers. We also did a treasure hunt around the council building, where we had to look for all the things in our booklet and found out more about our city. Some of us were lucky enough to explore the basement where we saw how many people biked to work and where all the bikes are kept! Some groups learnt about our city’s rubbish and recycling and some learnt about how the traffic is managed. One of the groups learnt about the history of Christchurch and the heritage buildings and the last group learnt about the parks in Christchurch.

One part of our trip involved looking at the actual design of the building. At the front of the building is a totem. The totem represents the people of Christchurch and the iwi that are connected to our city. There is also a water feature that represents our local awa and it even had one of our houses, Ōpāwaho, engraved onto a stone!

We had a great trip and it made us think about how we can be great leaders when we are back at school!
