End of Year Reports

Julie Bassett —

This report provides a summary of your child’s progress and achievement in relation to New Zealand Curriculum expectations. It includes your child’s and their teacher’s judgements about how well they are learning and the progress they are making.

This report provides a summary of your child’s progress and achievement in relation to New Zealand Curriculum expectations. It includes your child’s and their teacher’s judgements about how well they are learning and the progress they are making.

Your child's judgements are made after considering progress in relation to learning goals.

The teacher’s judgements are made after considering a range of assessments including:

  • knowledge and appreciation of your child and your child’s interests

  • observations of your child as they learn

  • conversations with your child

  • results from tests

Page 1 - Outlines your child’s key competency strengths, school activities and general comments about the year from the classroom teacher.

Page 2 - The reading, writing and maths goals your child has achieved and their next steps in each of these curriculum areas.

Page 3 - This table shows the achievement of your child against the NZ Curriculum expectations.

There is a reason these pages are placed in this order. At Somerfield Te Kura Wairepo we know that for a child to flourish at school they need to develop strong Key Competency skills and be able to identify their strengths. That is why these skills, activities and general comments are on Page 1.

Page 2 provides the opportunity to celebrate the goals your child has set and achieved in reading, writing and mathematics. The next steps enable you to discuss what your child’s focus may be for the beginning of 2021.

Page 3 enables the parent/caregiver the opportunity to understand where your child’s reading, writing and maths achievement sits compared to the NZ curriculum expectations. However, we would not expect you to be spending time talking about this with your child.

All other Key Learning area achievements have been sent out during the year as Learning Snapshots through the app and this will continue into 2022.

Graphs

For the end of year report we have added a level showing your child's progress against the New Zealand Curriculum.

In the NZ curriculum for reading, writing and maths, a level of learning runs over two years.

Years 0-2 - Curriculum Level 1

Years 3-4 - Curriculum Level 2

Years 5-6 - Curriculum Level 3

It is common for a child to be above a curriculum level in Years 2 and 4, and then at a curriculum level in Years 3 and 5. If your child is in Year 3 or Year 5 it is exceptional for them to be working above that level, as this means working two years above their curriculum expectation. Please take this into consideration when reading the graph. This does not mean your child has gone ‘backwards’.

Achievement data accumulates throughout your child's time at school, so you can see the progress your child is making in reading, writing and maths at the mid-year and end-of-year points, during their 6 years at Somerfield Te Kura Wairepo.
