Volcanoes, rockets and mysterious colour changes: Year 3 & Year 4 science

Julie Bassett —

Science this term

For science this term, the Year 3 & Year 4 students have been investigating the reactions of mixing baking soda and an acid - vinegar, fruit juice and even tomato sauce! The focus has been on observing carefully and reporting accurately. From the popular volcano experiment, we moved on to making pop rockets powered by baking soda and vinegar (very successful) and rounded off the unit by investigating acids and bases using red cabbage juice, which changed colour according to what was added to it. A perfect way to introduce the topic of "Potions", which many of the children asked for. From all accounts, the children have really enjoyed their Friday science sessions this term.
