Year 5 students' Design Jam Project

Last term, a group of Year 5 students were working with a Somerfield parent on coming up with ideas to ensure Selwyn Street becomes a safer crossing zone for our community. On Monday this week, 5 student representatives went to work with students from Christchurch South Intermediate and Addington School on all the ideas they have come up with. This was a great opportunity for the Christchurch City Council to hear their ideas and to work together as members of the Somerfield community on changes that can be made to Selwyn Street. Showing our students how they can become active members of their community.

 Design jam:

In term 3 a small group of Somerfield year 5 students that I am a part of are working on Selwyn St and we are hoping that we can put a stop to accidents and injuries trying to cross the street. We have been interested in Selwyn Street and how it is such a wide road and that makes it hard to get across safely.

On Monday the 19th of October Me, Kaiah, Charlotte B, Milana and Noah G went along to South Intermediate to present our ideas to Addington Primary, South Intermediate and some members of Christchurch City Council.(CCC) We presented our ideas and problems and listened to the other schools problems throughout the street as well. Then together we all came up with what problems seemed to be the most common down the whole street. When we were there we discussed a lot about Selwyn St and I think the most common thing everyone thought was dangerous about it was that the car's speed down the street because of how wide it is. We came up with some solutions that we could put to work and we stuck some pieces of paper on the wall that had some of our solutions on them. At the end we all went around the room with some dots and stuck them on the solutions we liked the most. I wasn't actually going to go at first so I am very thankful that I could. I had a lot of fun!!

What we did:

  • We shared our killer facts by standing up the front of the hall and explaining our Ideas to the group.

  • We got a big sticky pad and listed our problems and then shared them.

  • Then we listed our solutions and shared them with the group.

  • We picked our top three solutions and explained what they were.

  • We stuck our solutions on the wall.

  • After that we picked our four favourite solutions.
