Gavin Bishop's Visit

Julie Bassett —

Wednesday, 14 September

On Wednesday the 14th of September, much loved New Zealand author Gavin Bishop came to visit Kōpapa. We welcomed him with the waiata, Tau Ana and sat anticipating what he had to say. He talked about his family's history, that his grandfather was born in the 1800’s. He talked about his great grandma, who saved the old church in Waikato.

He held up his sketchbooks and he said that: “Depending on what type of book size, some books take six weeks, and others take about two years” we were all amazed. He showed us this type of transparent paper called tracing paper. With tracing paper, you can transport your drawing to another piece of paper.

Gavin visited our classrooms and had a look at some of the work we have been doing for our Aotearoa NZ Histories unit. He had a look at our wall which had all our Maori posters and Flora and Fauna facts. He had a look around and signed some books. Thank you Gavin for helping us know what the purpose for writing and illustrating is!
