Tua o te Ngahere

Kiwi's Name has been approved

I’m pleased to confirm that the name Tua o te Ngahere has been approved.

Attached are a few photos of Tua at 2 days old and 6 days old, and here is a little bit of info about him:

· Dad’s name is Olly and Olly lives in Makino (Taranaki) which is where this chick has come from.

· The egg was lifted from the forest and brought to the Crombie Lockwood Kiwi Burrow on the 16th October 2020.

· The egg was 45 days old when we received it and still had 33 days of incubation left (78 days incubation for a kiwi, that’s a long time)

· It hatched in the early hours of the 18th October, a few hours before the kiwi keepers arrived at work.

· It weighed 312.5 grams at hatch.

· Over the next 3 weeks Tua will grow big and strong in the brooder room and will be released to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari between 21 and 30 days of age.

I am waiting on a framed photo for the school along with a little certificate and the books which the school won. I drop them off when I receive from our head office. The Kiwi Conservation Club Membership has also been set up so you should receive an email about this. Let me know if this is not the case.

Also, if it’s of interest we have this video which explains a bit more about the Crombie Lockwood Kiwi Burrow which is quite helpful for kids to understand a bit better about the process. https://youtu.be/0pjfhB9kFDM

Look forward to dropping off your prize pack shortly.

Kind regards

Rose
