Top Team - written by Freya Askew

On the sixteenth of February 2021 Somerfield Te Kura Wairepo held Top Team. Each house (Rapaki, Kahukura, Harakeke and Opawaho) went head to head in eleven challenges. Each house was put into teams. The year 5s and 6s went in the morning and the year 3s and 4s went in the afternoon. The year 1s and 2s compete next week, set up by the year 6s.

Due to the sudden change to COVID alert level two, parents weren’t allowed to come watch or help. Top Team wasn’t postponed or canceled though, instead some of the teachers did more than one activity. The year 6’s did an excellent job of helping the year 3s and 4s.

I myself am a Somerfield student and got to participate and they really out did themselves this year. All eleven tasks showed kids teamwork and improved it. All the people that helped make Top Team happen have achieved a lot as they strived for perfection. All the teachers, support staff, and people that came in with the equipment deserve a giant thank you. The kids had exercise and fun, the year 6s got a look at the type of leadership opportunities they will get, and the teachers got a fun day with the students.
