Orchard planting

Julie Bassett —

5 August 2021

Last Thursday we planted the school orchard, the teachers selected one student from each classroom to help. We had a specialist planter come in and teach us about how to plant the trees. She showed us how to plant the trees, it took a long time and a lot of effort. Here are a few kids opinions about the orchard.

Sonia Vyazalova Room 1 (Year 5)

"Planting the orchard was fun and it was a very creative idea. It couldn’t get any better, I loved digging the holes and finding worms. The weather wasn’t the best but it was still fun. I think we should have planted more trees because I can look after them next year. "

Charlotte Irie Room 5 (Year 2)

“I thought it was fun finding the worms in the holes, it was also fun getting my hands dirty.

We planted two feijoa trees, one plum, one apple and two pears. There are hopefully two more trees coming but we do not know when they will be here. The hardest bit was digging the holes to put the trees in because it was difficult to get the spade into the ground.

Now that we have an orchard there is fruit for us to eat and for people to help themselves. We hope that our school enjoys the orchard and the future eco council looks after it well."
