Bikes in Schools Programme

Denise Torrey —

As part of our bikes in schools programme our tamariki will be undertaking bike safety workshops. They DO NOT need a bike for these. The workshops are taken by council personnel and start on 11 March.

Exploring Active Travel Years 0-4:
This workshop is taught outside on court with the outcome of understanding what active travel is, why it is good for you and the importance of road safety. It involves an activity to teach ‘Stop Look and Listen’.

For Year 3-4, there is an additional ‘scavenger hunt’ activity to explore around the inside of the school gates to identify safe crossings and safety features.

Exploring Active Travel Years 5-6:

This workshop starts in class and extends to active travel. It involves exploring around the school gates to identify safety features and hazards when travelling to school. Students then create a comic strip of a hazard when coming to school and create a safety feature to solve the problem.
