Ti Kouka Kindergarten celebrates Diwali with Community

Rachel Pringle —

Ti Kouka Kindergarten was a hive of activity with over 100 friends and families coming together to celebrate Diwali ( Hindu New Year) at the Kindergarten last Wednesday night.

The Kindergarten was all lit up with the diyas (hand-held lamps), lights, traditional decorations and song for the celebrations to begin.

The children and teachers had been learning a lot about Rangoli and creating some beautiful art, the baking of traditional sweets and learning song and dance to share to use while the celebrations were underway in the weeks before in anticipation of the evening.

Children and their families came in the door with cars parked around the block for miles. Some families came dressed in traditional dress and felt empowered and valued to do so.

The community spirit was certainly alive and came together,  with special mention of two amazing superstars cooking and catering for around 100 people on the night with a range of traditional foods.

Children sang songs they had been learning during the build-up to the evening as well as everyone getting up to learn a Diwali song, with all children and adults joining in together. The enthusiasm and laughter were delightful and heard afar.

The atmosphere was amazing and a great night was had by all.

Kindergarten learning is about including all cultures and families to feel welcome and to feel their culture is accepted and valued.

This was certainly an outstanding night which will be remembered for years to come.
