Mana whenua history explored at Lake Tekapo Kindergarten

Lake Tekapo Kindergarten —

At Lake Tekapo Kindergarten, we were very privileged to have Donna and Sarah from Te Ana Māori Rock Art come to share with our tamariki some learning experiences.
Through hands on activities and singing waiata we explored the rich Mana Whenua history of our local region.

Beginning with the story of Tuna Heke which is about an eel, New Zealand’s largest migrating fish and known as the largest native fish to be in our freshwater lakes, rivers and streams.

Tamariki certainly enjoyed it when Donna had eels wiggling and moving over the floor as she was continuing to tell the story, even the Tamariki were wiggling on the floor pretending to be eels :)

Tamariki were given their own piece of uku (clay) and began creating their own Tuna Heke. There were many different types of eels.

The session was finished with the tuna Waiata which the Tamariki were familiar with.
