Eco Centre Visit - sharing knowledge and skills with tamariki at Lake Tekapo Kindergarten

Last week we had Briony visit us from the Eco Centre. She talked to us about recycling. She showed us a piece of paper that one day wanted to grow up to be a birthday card with a unicorn on it. But for it to have that chance, we had to remember to put it in the yellow bin. And the plastic tray that wanted to grow up to become a plastic bottle… Again that had to go into the yellow bin so it had that chance. But only certain kinds of plastic. We learnt which kind with a song. When we see the little recycling triangles on the plastic we can look to see “1, 2, skip a few, and 5”.

She also took us outside to see the worm farm. She was impressed to see the tamariki looking after the worms so well and with a few suggestions from her, we may be able to produce even more worms and castings for the gardens. We need to remember to chop up banana skins so that they decompose more quickly, making them yummier for the worms. She also had a peek at our empty compost bin and gave some suggestions of how to get that started so that we can now compost all of our food scraps. Up til now we weren’t doing much with the scraps that couldn’t go to the worms. But now we can compost them to keep creating good soil for our gardens.
