Kowhai Kindergarten — November 13, 2024
Tamariki, kaiako and whānau had a fun morning taking the bus to Te Ana Rock Art Centre and engaging in the programme they provided for us.
Te Ana Rock Art staff reinforced pūrākau (stories) we have been learning about at kindergarten, beginning to weave our local environment into our kindergarten story.
Tamariki have been exploring the tuna in the local rivers and the importance of these as a food source and a clever and resourceful species.
Kaiako have also been talking about the importance of Waipouri (Mt Horrible) to Timaru. This is the Mauka (mountain) that we can see from our playground. The basalt from this ancient volcano forms the landscape and harbour of Timaru. It is also the source of the local bluestone. Waipouri last erupted around 2 million years ago.
Tamariki will continue to share their learning through the stories and experiences about Waipouri and Tuna with their whānau, and how this connects to our local curriculum and the story of Aoraki.
