Wendy Huriwai —

The New Zealand Curriculum has eight learning areas and these make up our day at school. All children are expected to participate in each learning area.

Curriculum

Health & Physical Education, English and Mathematics are a part of our every day morning programmes.

We are in the process of reviewing our Mathematics curriculum and you are welcome to email me your thoughts on how we might best share with you, what children learn and how you could help at home.

This term our school-wide Topic/Inquiry focus is Technology which will include some exciting learning opportunities, including trips out of the school and visitors coming in. Please look out for the notices from teachers. Hopefully, we will move back down the COVID -19 levels rapidly an these will be able to continue.

Self-Care

We all know that to be at our best, we need adequate sleep, exercise and nutrition, feel good about ourselves and practise good hygiene. If you need support with developing good sleep, eating and hygiene patterns, please feel most welcome to contact our Public Health Nurse through Kirsten, our Deputy Principal and Special Needs Coordinator.

Attendance

We continue to closely monitor attendance of our students. The following information is provided to you to emphasise the importance of attending everyday.

There is direct correlation between attendance and achievement. Frequent absences make it difficult for students to maintain friendships and make progression in their learning.

Unless your child is sick, has a medical appointment or there is a family bereavement, they should be at school every day. School starts at 9:00am. To allow time to unpack, settle and catch up with teachers and friends, children can arrive anytime from 8:30am and we hope to see all children at school by 8:45am.

Parents and guardians also have legal obligations to ensure their children attend school. The school expects parents to:

  • notify the school if their child is going to be absent by phone, text, Skool Loop, our website, or email by 9:00 am
  • try to arrange appointments etc. outside school hours or in holidays
  • work with the school to manage any attendance issues.

Truancy Services may be engaged if unacceptable levels of absence are noted (10 half days per term).

At any time you are able to view our full policies at schooldocs.co.nz

Search for our school, and the user name is: south and password: hornby.

Thank you for the way you have managed to move so easily back to Alert Level 2. Of course, none of us wanted to be back at this level but while we maintain a watchful eye on the situation that is developing in Auckland, we want to assure our community that we will continue to follow all guidance from the Ministries of Health and Education to keep our South Hornby children and community safe.  Please be assured that we will pass any new information regarding safety to you as soon as we possibly can.

Noho haumaru, noho pai

Stay safe, stay well.
