International Language Week

Wendy Huriwai —

Uru Mānuka Kāhui Ako has been asked to work on our 'Pathways Home' sculpture in Denton Park. We are looking forward to working collaboratively with Hornby Schools to replace the rocks which used to be contained in the cage. The rocks will be painted with the stories of children from our Hornby Schools.

Good afternoon, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Nǐ hǎo, Salam, Kia orana, Namaste, Kumusta, Bula vinaka, Tēnā koutou kātoa,

The brief received for this project in 2002 from the Council was:

"In February 2002 the Riccarton/Wigram Community Board of the Christchurch City Council allocated funding toward the first public art work to be developed in the Hornby area.

The rationale behind the project is to celebrate the ‘community’ of Hornby and what makes this area unique to Christchurch and to those who choose to live here."

The artist commissioned in 2004 was Judith Streat and her vision was:

'The designs on the rocks must follow the theme of the artwork which focuses on the local history of Hornby, genealogy, culture of area, self, peer group, school or family.'

Judith Streat drew inspiration for her design from timelines, family trees and the geography of Hornby.

The Waimakariri rocks have a geographic and natural link to the Canterbury plains. The pattern drawn from an old map of the Hornby area has geographic and man made links to the Canterbury Plains and Christchurch. A genealogical link to the people of Hornby is made by the designs on the stones whilst the map is a figurative representation embodying the lives, stories and personal histories of all the people of Hornby and its communities."

We will begin this work early in the new term. So soon this sculpture will again be filled with beautiful artworks reflecting the culture and journeys of the Hornby children. If you have artistic skills to share and support our tamariki, we would love to hear from you.

If you have not recently met with your child's teacher to share learning successes and next steps, please book in for a meeting during Week 10 - 27th or 29th June.

Ngā mihi,

Wendy Huriwai
