The New Zealand Youth Choir Performs at SNBS.

Melanie Field —

This afternoon, the Year 7 and 8 section of our school choir participated in a singing workshop with the NZYC!

Our students began the workshop by singing Fade Away, deserving the huge round of applause they received.  This was followed by the visiting choir singing Te Aroha.  It was amazing to hear the fullness of sound they produced and to hear the beautiful harmonies.  Our students' eyes were wide-open after hearing the first line!

The choirs then combined to sing Te Aroha, beginning by learning the melody line, followed by the harmony parts.  Everyone joined in to make a fantastic sound as one choir.

The NZYC Vocal Coach helped out with some breathing and vowel exercises which came in handy singing, "What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor?".  Our Year 7/8 students were coached through the song by their older, more experienced, mentors.  The end result was powerful, bringing smiles to all faces.

At 2:20 pm, the Wave Riders welcomed the NZ Youth Choir in front of the entire school, performing 'Ka Haea Te Ata'.  They gave it everything and absolutely rose to the occasion.  Ka mau te wehi!

For the main event, the visiting choir performed a range of beautiful songs including a Māori song 'Kua Rongo Ake Au', an award-winning song 'Matariki', an African Spiritual 'Elijah', a jazz song, and lastly, a memorable rendition of 'What Shall We Do With the Drunken Sailor?'.

Under the shelter, the sound was incredible.  We felt very privileged to hear some of New Zealand's best singers.  Perhaps some of our students will be part of this award-winning choir in the future.

At 7:30 pm on Friday, 16 April, the NZYC will be performing a public concert at Knox Church.  You won't want to miss it!  Click the following link to see their recent performance on the BBC as part of the Commonwealth Day celebrations.
