Maths at SNBS: Maths - No Problem!

Karen Ward —

We are excited to be rolling out ‘Maths - No Problem!’ across South New Brighton School after a successful trial of the programme in Year 5/6 in 2024.

Maths - No Problem was designed in the UK based on a model from Singapore.  It has now been adapted to fit the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum - Mathematics and Statistics.

The programme uses a mastery approach to acquiring knowledge and learning maths skills.  This means the programme is very structured and follows a set sequence. Maths mastery creates an environment in which pupils from all attainment levels can thrive.

Students are taught in year groups within their own waka and work thorugh the programme at the same time. They are given ample time to master each topic before moving on. Lots of equipment, working with a maths buddy, using a textbook and a workbook are all parts of the programme (with some differences in Year 0/1). Topics are revisited at a higher level as the curriculum builds.

All of our teaching staff (including part-time and classroom release teachers) have been involved in professional development in preparation to deliver the programme.

Math - No Problem! has similarities to structured literacy, which is also being rolled out across the school:

  • Sequential approach to concepts

  • Uses an ‘I do, we do, you do’ approach

  • Set lesson sequence

  • Ongoing opportunities for assessment and daily monitoring

  • Helps pupils develop a deep, long-term and adaptable understanding of maths

  • Inclusive approach where all children achieve

  • Slower pace which results in greater progress

We have attached some articles about the programme or you could visit the Maths - No Problem! website for further information.
