Southbridge School Jump Jam Team heads to South Island Nationals

Nicole Thornton —

The Southbridge School Jump Jam Team is made up of 10 Year 5 & 6 students who are coached by Vicky Joyce and Mrs Thornton. Way back in June the team submitted their preliminary video to try and make it through to Nationals. After many nervous weeks of waiting for news if we had made it through or not. Finally, the day came and the email arrived, we had made it into the Year 5 & 6 X-treme category which was amazing. We got to work on the routine and the song that had been chosen was 24k Magic by Bruno Mars and our costumes were hip-hop themed. This category allowed up to 40% changes in choreography and formations so we set to work to create a fabulous routine. This group of kids trained every Monday after school and even during the holidays to ensure they were stage ready.

On Saturday 5th November 2022 ten very excited kids were getting ready for Jump Jam South Island Nationals. This had been a long time coming and the excitement and nerves were coming through.

Finally, the day came for comp, after getting hair, makeup, and costumes on we headed to Cashmere High School for our performance. We were up 4th and the nerves were real. The team gave an awesome performance on stage and made their coaches proud. The costumes were amazing and a special thank you to Ms. Harvey for altering these for us. Although this year we didn't place top 3 the team came 5th and scored over 90/100 which is fantastic in itself.

A massive thank you to Vicky Joyce, this couldn't have been possible without her coaching and choreography and the changes made to the routine.

The team walked away with 4 excellence awards and held their heads high knowing they had given their absolute all on stage and put on a great show.

The 2022 Jump Jam members are

Clover Arnold-Dunn, Ethan Rolton, Lana Taefu, Lorelei Gousmett, Lucia Shaw, Luminitza Torres, McKenna Chynoweth, Shaye Welsh, Tayla Joyce, Zaria de Thierry
