Swimming and Water Safety

Nikki McCartin —

We had some fantastic days down at the Southbridge Pool - we are so incredibly fortunate to have such a wonderful facility to use.

Swimming lessons - At the start of every year we are lucky enough to use Southbridge Pool for our swimming lessons. Our aim is to increase students water confidence while developing skills and stroke techniques for all our students.

Swimming Sports - What a brilliant day we had with some exceptional swimming on display. It was exciting watching our swimmers race against each other, there were some very close races! We had a number of swimmers swim their way into the zone event this year. A special mention to Hazel Bundy, Andee Chynoweth and Kahukura Pomare who competed at the Canterbury Swimming Championships at Selwyn Aquatic Centre.

A very special thanks to all the helpers who continue to make our swimming sessions possible.

Water Safety - This year we introduced our very first Water Safety sessions to the entire school. We worked alongside staff at Selwyn Aquatic Centre for some professional learning to be sure we were implementing the best lessons with our classes. Our Water Safety lessons were aimed at establishing broad fundamental skills and competencies for life-long water safety. We spent time each day in the pool practicing water rescues, capsizing and finding air pockets under boats, shore rescues, life jacket huddles and had lots of fun!
