Southbridge School Hangi

Tamara Bell —

Wednesday 27th November - all welcome, nau mai, haere mai!

Earlier this year through consultation, Whānau Māori suggested a hangi for our students, whānau and community members and we were 100% on board with that idea!

We have organised to put down a hangi at our school on Wednesday 26th November to prepare a huge feast for all staff, students, parents and community members who have supported the school over the last year. This is also a fantastic opportunity to provide a cultural and authentic learning experience for our students.

We have a committee of several super helpful parents who are working with me to organise food and other materials we will need for the hangi.  I have included a list of these items below firstly so you know what kind of preparation goes into a hangi (catering for 200 people) and secondly, in case there are some items you could help us with.

Hangi ingredient & materials list

We are working on getting as many of these items donated as possible so the cost will be kept to just a gold coin donation which would go towards purchasing whatever else we need that wasn't donated and any left will be used as a small koha for the team of men laying the hangi...who all happen to be my own whānau, including my Dad, brother and uncle - this truly will be a family-friendly day!

We aim to be serving the hangi lunch at 1.30pm on Wednesday 27th November and all are welcome - parents, siblings, extended whānau - so please put it in your diary and bring your appetite.

Mmmmm - I can't wait!
