PB4L at Southbridge School

Ian Quilter - May 12, 2021

Southbridge School is a proud PB4L school!

PB4L - Positive Behaviour for Learning

We are a Positive Behaviour for Learning School.  PB4L is all about teaching children the right behaviour, just like we teach any other subject at school.

“If a student does not know how to read, we teach
If a student does not know how to swim, we teach
If a student does not know how to multiply, we teach

If a student does not know how to behave, we teach.”

PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective. The framework is based on international evidence.

The Positive Behaviour for Learning School-Wide framework, otherwise known as PB4L School-Wide, is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. The framework can be tailored to your school’s own environment and cultural needs.

It’s not about changing the students; it’s about changing the environment, systems and practices you have in place to support them to make positive behaviour choices.

PB4L School-Wide is based on the Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework developed at the University of Oregon in the 1990s. PBIS is now in thousands of schools across the United States and there are over 800 School-Wide schools in New Zealand.

Southbridge School Values

Southbridge School has five amazing school values. They are: whanaungatanga, mana, manaakitanga, aroha and kaitiakitanga and they underpin everything we do at Southbridge. You will see a poster below showing what they mean to us and how they connect. Each has its own special colour and these also relate to the ‘Caught Being Good’ tickets your child receives as an acknowledgement for them displaying a school value at school, for example, if we see a child picking up rubbish, any staff member could give them a green Kaitiakitanga CBG (caught being good) ticket to reward them for displaying this value. So please encourage your child to win as many CBG tickets as they can this year and then praise them when they do and ensure they get their tickets into the prize box before each assembly as they might win a prize! We believe in trying to acknowledge and reward the positive behaviours of individual children while at the same time, modelling to other children what our expectations are, in the hopes that this will help to reduce inappropriate behaviours and show we have high expectations for all. In 2022 we introduced values wristbands. When a child reaches 100 CBG tickets of a value they will be presented with a values wristband at assembly with the aim to collect all five of the values wristbands during their time at Southbridge School.

At the end of each term, we also acknowledge students who have done a fantastic job of consistently demonstrating and 'living' our school values by awarding values badges - 1 for each value for five different students. These are awarded at our celebration assemblies every term.

Please feel free to discuss our values with your child and talk to them about what type of things they could do at school to show they are living our values. It is also a great way to discuss your own family values with your children. We value parents and whānau as the ‘first teachers’ in a child's life, so it is important that we help our kids to see the links and any similarities between what you and your family value and expect and what our school values and expects too, even if they may have a slightly different name or meaning within your family.
