Community Two - Year 4 & 5

Nikki McCartin - December 6, 2021

We have had a fantastic year in Community Two, we have made new friends, tried new things and had a lot of fun!

Here are some of our favourite memories...

Spencer Park Camp - The Year 5s went to Spencer Park for camp. We went to the beach, we got lost in the forest trying to find the orienteering markers, we took our bikes and raced through Bottle Lake forest. At The Groynes we took water samples and identified the organisms we found. We had a camp concert and played on the air cushion. It was AWESOME!

Cultural day - We learnt all about Lake Ellesmere and Ngati Moki Marae. We learnt some songs and games with rakau and we painted some koru onto stones from Taumutu Beach.

Our Future, Our Responsibility - This year after our fruit and vegetables were almost finished we decided to let some go to seed so we could harvest them and try to regrow them ourselves to be 100% sustainable. We dried the seeds in our cupboards for months and then when it was time, we planted them and took care of them until they became seedlings. We are really proud to be able to say that we kept the growth cycle going!

Our orchard had a massive yield this year. We worked really hard to increase the fruit production by learning about what conditions fruit trees grow best in and we repurposed woollen box liners to help with moisture control and weed reduction.

We learnt all about dehydrating and preserving the fruit and vegetables we produce here at school. We got to try heaps of different foods that had been fresh, cooked and dehydrated - feijoas and green apples were our favourites.

We wanted to do our bit to reduce rubbish so we decide to investigate different types of food covers. We found that reusable food covers were the best for the environment so we researched how to make them. Once we had purchased our materials we learnt how to cut patterns, pin templates and finished off by sewing them with a sewing machine. We were so very proud of ourselves.

Water Safety - We had the team from Selwyn Aquatic Centre come out and teach us how to safely get in and out of a boat, how to tread water and make survival huddles. We learnt to throw rescue ropes and find the air pocket under a capsized boat. It was really fun!

Art - We are an arty bunch in Com 2. We have made mosaics, painted with water colours, dye, and paint. We've worked with pastels and recyclable goods. We have made collaborative art pieces and learnt all about origami.

Winter Sport - The Year 4 group learn how to play Floorball with Mrs Johnson, it was really cool! Mitch taught us some new games that helped with our balance and coordination and Yuri came and taught us how to play Korfball. The Year 5s got to participate at the Winter Tournament for the first time, it was so exciting, the Netball A team won!

Awards at assembly - Our favourite assembly was when our class won 4 of 5 the Caught Being Good awards AND Gertie all in the same assembly! Mrs M was so proud of us she let us have an extra long morning tea that day!

Lego - We LOVE lego! All year long we have made, re made and made again so many lego creations. We've made bridges, castles, towers, motor boats, kingdoms, if you can name it, we've made it!

We can't believe how quickly our year has gone, we are really excited to see what 2022 will bring.
