We love that our kids can bring their wheels to school and have a fun time riding them in their breaks, but this is a privilege, not a right and there are some really important rules that we have, to ensure everyone has a good time and keeps safe!
Scooter & Bike Safety
All children must wear helmets when riding their scooter, roller skates/blades, skateboards or ripsticks on the scooter court. This also applies to riding of bikes on the bike track.
We have a ‘no grips, no riding’ rule for scooters and bikes, and the grips must not be worn down to the metal at the ends. New grips can be purchased quite cheaply from The Warehouse, bike shops and other suppliers. Nasty injuries can occur when the metal ends of handlebars are exposed.
We expect all children who bring their wheels to school to walk them at all times throughout the school (including the school crossing), except for when they are on the scooter court and bike track. It is dangerous to ride them around the school grounds as other children can be knocked over or hit easily.
Only scooters, rollerblades/skates, skateboards and ripsticks are permitted on the scooter court, no bikes or trikes may be ridden.
We expect children to park their wheels safely in the racks and not leave them lying on the grass or on footpaths as they become a tripping hazard.
Finally, the last important rule is that you can only ride your own scooter or bike etc. We do not want children sharing or taking other kids scooters or bikes please, with permission or not. It causes a lot of issues and puts us at risk if a child was injured while using something that does not belong to them.
As part of our Bus Safety Procedures, Nelson Bus Lines advise that scooters and skateboards etc. are not permitted on the buses due to Health & Safety and Ministry requirements. Your child is welcome to bring their scooter / skateboard etc to school in the car on a Monday morning and then store it in the bus shed or classroom each afternoon, taking it home again by car on Friday afternoon (or any other day that suits). It is your child's responsibility to make sure their wheels are put away safely and securely.
If your child likes to bring their wheels to school, we would really appreciate you reminding and reinforcing these expectations. Please also take the time to check the handle grips, if the rubber is worn at the ends and you can see the metal, they are unsafe.
Thanks in advance for your support!
