Southern Cross Campus mathematicians competed against the best in Years 9 and 10 in South Auckland in a Mathex-like competition

Myra Faamausili —

The South Auckland Mathematics Challenge (think pub quiz meets the 100m sprint but make it math-y). We were very fortunate to have hosted it on home grounds.

Mālō lava le soifua,

The participants even expressed that they enjoyed having their friends and school family cheer them on as they furiously punched numbers into calculators hoping it would soon show the correct answers.

We entered 3 teams into the Year 9 competition which is the most we’ve ever entered for the Year 9 round. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to come away with the win, but the keenness to give new things a go and the budding excitement for math has been a massive win for our students.

We also had, for the very first time, a team of Year 8 students who performed brilliantly! Despite being quite nervous, as soon as the timer started, they immediately switched into ‘A game’ mode and worked through the questions like mathemagicians. A huge special shout out to our amazing Year 8 team: Sulufou Ah Ching, Narijanten Amovaa Segi, Kathy Nguyen, and Solomone Sialeand our Campus Maths Team Ana and Lilliane for coaching them through their first Mathex experience.

For the Year 10 round, we entered a whopping 4 teams into the competition. It was a very close game but in the end, it was our Team A who came out on top to claim 1st place with our Team B snatching 2nd place.

Congratulations to 1st place winners: Ilaisaane Fainga, Irene Otuomon, Mori-Anne Tearetoa

Congrats also to our 2nd place winners: George Harrison Niusila, Roger Luu, Aayan Leewai

We are so so proud of all our students! They showed excellence in their work ethic, their willingness to participate, and in their commitment to their learning. It has been awesome to spend this week celebrating student success and excellence and it made for the perfect week to host the fourth round of the South Auckland Mathematics Challenge.
