Great to be back at Cantamaths

On Wednesday four Year 8's headed off to Christchurch Arena to compete against teams from all over Canterbury. This competition is a challenge for mathematical minds and is always a very noisy event. The teams have 20 questions to answer in 30 minutes. They are given one question at a time and once they have answered this question correctly or passed then they are given the next. They can not return to any passed questions.

These are some of the questions they had to answer:

Q4) One of the factors of 48 is chosen at random. What is the probability that the chosen factor is not a multiple of 4? Give your answer as a fraction in the simplest form.

Q8) Jeff has five times as many sisters as brothers. His sister Claire has three times as many sisters as brothers. If there are a total of 13 children in the family, how many of them are girls?

Q9) Three water pipes are used to fill a swimming pool. The first pipe alone takes 4 hrs to fill the pipe. The second pipe alone takes 6 hrs to fill the pool while the third pipe takes 12 hrs to fill the pool. If all three pipes are turned on at the same time, how long will it take to fill the pool?

"I couldn't believe how loud and noisy it was - everybody was very excited about maths! It was great fun," said Grace.
