St John visits the Senior School

Bobbie Jo Pringle —

Shayne from St John came in to teach us about D.R.S.A.B and how to treat a patient suffering from hypothermia.

This week the senior students had the opportunity to spend some time with Shayne from St John. She went over what to do when you find a person unresponsive and how to correctly use the  D.R.S.A.B. D is for danger, R is for responsive, S is send for help, A is airway and B is breathing. We learned how to put the person in the stable side position (recovery position) so that they do not choke on their own vomit or saliva while waiting for emergency services to arrive.

The last part of the session was running through a scenario of tramping in a group and one of the group getting wet, cold, and suffering from hypothermia. While we did lots of things correctly in the end we all ended up killing the member of our group but we did a lot of learning along the way and should we have to try to save someone again we would be much more successful then.

Shayne made sure everyone knew the correct order of what to do when you find someone unresponsive before she left. Thanks Krystal for organising this for the senior students - it was a great morning.
