Milford Dance and Drama

Sophie James —

This term, Milford have delved into The Arts with dance and drama.

Dance

We have really enjoyed learning about the elements of dance. We had to think of an animal native to New Zealand and then we researched how it behaves and moves. Then we put those moves into a dance. We had to include all these elements in our dance too: different body bases, different levels and a canon.

Body bases are the parts of your body that touch the ground.

Levels are the distances from the floor.

A canon is where dancers take turns to do exactly the same movement - like a mexican wave.

Everybody was so A+ adventurous in getting up in front of their class to perform their dances and it was fantastic watching them too!

Drama

In Milford we have enjoyed trying out different roles in plays. We were focused on communicating and interpreting. We did this by sharing drama through informal presentations. We responded to ways in which drama tells stories and conveys ideas. We re-enacted traditional stories like Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Three Little Pigs. The children enjoyed acting out their roles and using expression in their voice. We also used “hot spotting’ where children had to be in character and answer questions about themselves. It was a lot of fun!
