Digital Technology and BYOD @ Springston School

Springston School —

Our students are involved in a wide range of learning to become safe users and consumers in the digtal world.

Digital technologies at Springston School:

The Technology learning area has been revised to strengthen the positioning of digital technologies in The New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. This is for all students from year 1–13. All schools and kura are expected to be teaching the new digital technology content in 2020.

The goal of this change is to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to become digitally capable individuals.

The change provides a greater focus on students building their skills so they can be innovative creators of digital solutions, moving beyond solely being users and consumers of digital technologies.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

We use digital technologies to support personalised learning, and to encourage student voice and creativity. To strengthen the way we do this, we now strongly recommend that all Year 5-8 students bring a device to school.

We do have some recommendations and requirements as to the most effective tools for use at school. However, as in the 'real' world, different devices may suit different learning needs. We believe learners should be able to choose the tools that suit them best. Some people prefer us to suggest a suitable device, so please see our recommended devices, which also mention the two Chromebook bundles we suggest you consider that are available online through our Tech partner, Cyclone - (scroll to Springston School on the drop-down list). Feel free to use the device you already have, if it meets our guidelines.

EXPENSE

We also understand that funding a device can present difficulties for some families, especially those who have more than one child in the Year 5-8 section of the school, or who may also be needing to purchase a device for a child going to high school.

With this in mind, we ask that you please come and talk to us (make an appointment as soon as possible with Dianne, our Principal) and we can discuss how we can assist you.
